These past couple of weeks have been filled with extraordinary adventure and chaos. We have really been getting to the nitty-gritty of what it means to produce food that is healthy for people and the planet. We discovered that monoculture’s efficiency isn’t very efficient at all and that growing a diversity of crops is delicious and nutritious for all. Ideally we would all raise food this way close by and prevent all the transportation that is involved in our food from being necessary.
Kindergarten and first have been exploring how cool and challenging it is to be a bird. We discovered that we could help by providing more feed for their return by making lovely and delicious pine cone bird feeders.
Fifth and Sixth are opening up a whole new can of worms if you will by exploring how we use energy and from what sources they come. Understanding the difference between combustion and its dangerous exhaust and solar has been a challenge but a worthwhile endeavor. The Museum even came with some solar motors for our use and understanding.
The worms are settling into their new homes and have only experienced a little bit of trouble form their new parents. Mostly they receive love, shelter and food from a bunch of really awesome kids.
Science fair is on its way and soon we will be seeing just how much food waste we produce, whether worm’s have food preferences and maybe the trouble with styrofoam…
